I went to an all day class on adopting a child who is in the foster care system with parental rights terminated. It was sobering. I must say it stopped me right in my tracks. I didn't think it would be like taking a puppy home or anything but the gravity of their years in foster care, the issues they deal with and the likelihood that the majority of them over a certain age will just stay a foster care kid until they're 18 was heart wrenching. They have problems but their biggest problem is that they just want a forever family and not be abandoned again.

I have a new respect for the people who adopt these special kids. I am going to stick out the 5 week course and see what happens.

I've read about the struggles of so many kids who "age out" of the foster care system. The turn 18 and they're turned out on the street to fend for themselves. Social Darwinism at its worst. I admire you for your determination, Melanie.

Adoption is not an easy issue at all.

Our system makes it hard to adopt, harder than even having a child at all. This is due to the laws being outdated.

Not to mention you are under the thumb of the government every day of your life.
