I lost my sense of smell 4 days ago. I have a severe sinus infection. You wouldn't think losing the ability to smell would be that big a deal but it has really thrown me off. I hope it comes back. Have any of you experienced this?

Not personally, but I had a roommate in college who lost her sense of smell for 6 months. She was on Junior Year abroad in China and fell off the Great Wall injuring her head. The rest of her recovered pretty quickly (She wasn't on a tall part of the wall) but the smell took awhile. She said it was really weird. She also lost weight because food was less interesting. Everything tasted similarly bland.

Everything tastes different, not tasteless but different. I had cooked bacon last night - couldn't smell it and if that wasn't odd enough, it just tasted like a stick of salt. Weight loss would be a plus!

How many people can say they fell off the Great Wall of China? I hate when I have a cold and everything taste dull.

Are you taking any prescription medications? I've heard from acquaintances that certain meds can cause that reaction. I hope it comes back soon! Riding public transportation could be much more enjoyable though!

@Mark - yes to meds - 15 days of antibiotic. My face is killing me! I have only had two sinus infections that i know of in my life and I don't know how people deal with the pain.

Ouch! I feel for you... I've had sinus headaches that were awful, but never major sinus infections. I hope the antibiotics can knock out the infection soon... hang in there!
