In regards to Kork (my Web2.0 application)...
I'm planning on making widgets and gadgets (gadgets = the windows version of widgets) for Kork. I think widgets are great and almost vital for the growth of online software as they enable the user to obtain their data without going through a browser. Widgets make the process easy, fast, simplified and make the web applications they connect to seem more like "traditional software" as it's done through the "desktop like normal".
I would like to make a widget that allows for users to see their "to do list" with the days planned events on it. I also want to make it so they can quickly go through the Kork contact book. It's my goal to put small non intrusive ads in this widget (similar to the ads in Pownce). I chose to put ads in because if the users don't go to the Kork site and use's the widget as a primary means of using Kork...then I loose money.
One thing I'm considering is making two widgets. The one I just mentioned would be free to download however it has ads in it and it's "read only". I intend on releasing another widget that allows for the same functionality but also allows for the user to update things through the widget (without ads). The only catch is the user would have to sign up for a "premium account" to use this widget. I intend on having other perks to becoming a member, but this is one thing I'm brainstorming at the moment.
What do you think of this idea?
