I just heard a man in his 40's talking about his daughters BFF. He actually said BFF. It's amazing how internet and text shortform has effected our language. I mean 20 years ago noone would know what any of this meant.

FTW
WTF
O RLY
Y RLY
IAWTC
OMG
RTFM
IDK

If I heard a guy in his 40s say "bff" I'd be very creeped out :)

I'm in my forties... well I'm forty. I know what all those things mean from usage.
  • Libby W. replied May 8th
@ kent I was using him as a reference point because 20 years ago he was 20 and no one at the time knew what any of that meant.

Also it striked me funny he was using bff it reminded me of the cell phone commercials.

after one of those commercials recently which had BFF used heavily, I think ppl now think it can b used in general context

I had to look up 'IAWTC,' the rest r easy.

@Libby - 20yrs ago nobody was IRC'ing or IM'ing or TXT/SMS'ing; so they didn't even exist....except maybe RTFM, OMG, ROFL, ROFLOL, IMO,IMHO, or WTF in forums/listservs/nntp.

I know a girl who named her cats ROFL and LMAO.

It also annoys the shit out of me when I see people using ETA as "Edited To Add".
  • Libby W. replied May 8th
ETA as edited to add. heh thats confusing and annoying. I wanted to buy two goldfish once just so I could name them Icon and Avatar.

I think ud have to look into the BOFH archives to find most of them.

As an old fart, I too would be offended by one of my peers using BFF, because the sentiment it expresses is more of a teenager kind of thing. Some of the others have been around long enough to have been established into the fogie culture, so they don't annoy as much. And I can say with absolute certainty that in the mid-80's, when I was a technical specialist supporting the use of specialized modeling software in the Transportation planning field, the use of RTFM was already in high gear. Believe me! There was no internet, but there were technical support calls, and really, isn't that all anyone would need for begin using this gem?
