I've been listening to Bob Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour" on XM Radio Channel 2 (all day.) Bob is very funny. He just told the story of how coal miners used to take a caged canary into the coal mine with them. The proverbial "Canary in a coal mine." Canaries are very sensitive to the air supply and especially to the presence of Carbon Monoxide and Methane.

The miners would continue to work as long as they could hear the canary singing. If the canary stopped singing, the miners would then know it was time to get the hell out of the mine. If the canary starting singing any song by Air Supply, it was time to get the hell out of the mine... as fast as possible.

True story... thank you Mr. Dylan.

Thanks for sharing that...pretty sentimental. Sometimes (often?) we forget where these guys came from.

    Interesting footnote:

This morning I was listening to some of my fave guys on Car Talk (or as they say...cah talk).

Breaking for a sponsor id, one of the guys said, "When it hears me sing, the canary asks to go into the mine!"

I would've had no idea what that meant if it weren't for your post here!
