A question...I have recently started to think about how SNS are or might change. Just the fact that people use pownce and twitter say something about how people interact. Are these users active in Facebook or MySpace as well? I look at my own interaction and most time is spent on IM and email, the rest divided to facebook, pownce and twitter. In fact, most of my updating of facebook status is done via twitter.

When it comes to SNS Google is doing a very interesting move activating your gmail addressbook as the base for you network which makes even more sense since those contacts are more "valuable"...add to this open social and then the locked networks that exist today.

Having "locked" networks has to create a problem. People don't want to create memberships everywhere, update and so on..I know myself that I often feel that I cannot start using many services such as dopplr because similar functionality exist in facebook and most of the people I interact with will never use dooplr instead of facebook. That has to be a problem for new services and internet startups...??

We can reason this out by looking at the sites that did this before.

Facebook and MySpace are nothing more than easier and flashier updates of Geocities and Tripod communities.

Twitter, Pownce and Jaiku, nothing more but threaded forums like one could find on AOL or various other ISPs.

Asking people what they used before and how frequent they used them and for what reasons and you will find the answer to SNS.

In fact I am pretty sure the analysis will be that people use them because other people suggested their use. And that continued use will be dependent on the amount or time they have in their fdaily lives and if others suggest something else that is "perceived" better.

Now if that sounds familiar in any way shape or form. It does.

Back in the day it was called what was popular or a fad.

SNS is the modern version of the Party Line on the telephone.

Humans do not change really. Only their circumstances.
