What would it mean if say Google leaped into the anti-virus solutions field? Providing their own free alternative to all other protection software out there.

Microsoft already tried their hand at this and failed, what do you think? Its not like they don't have the funds to give it a shot.

I think its sad that often times you still have to pay for such an essenstial service, it would be great if all anti-virus software vendors offered their own free alternative. Yeah I know there are already are free alternatives but half are now crippled by design and the other half just aren't that great. I guess what I'm getting at is we need one viable, trusted & free solution, ONE.

Would you be for or against something like gAV? Would you switch from what you're currently using if it showed potential.

I'd put it on my windows machines for sure. Most of my computers are running Linux and don't have any AV running on them. It'd be cool to see a company with the cash to do it well churn out a free AV program/security suite.

Yeah, do it and do it well. Cross Platform AV too, now that would be awesome... because hey, any OS could use an AV product.

It would be in endless beta with no assurance that it would work and be updated.

I don't use google for anything but search, that's all they are really good for.

The best thing Google could do is stop letting malware rank on their results pages...
