Ben: Distros like Ubuntu (and Fedora, which I use) are targeted more at the Desktop market, considering how the packages are updated and installed, with enough binary data to be compatible for thousands of configurations, instead of -just- yours.

Bryan: Consider something like Gentoo[1] or Slackware[2] for Server needs, since the overhead is lightweight and the packages are optimized for your exact machine specs (you'll have to do a lot of compiling for that) - the speed improvement is worth investigating.

Or, better yet - consider trying FreeBSD instead of Linux.

Anton - they do a server edition of Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/... - no idea if it's any good though :)

Ubuntu Breezy seems pretty solid from everything I've ran across.

Last time I did a comparison (which was over two years ago) I was keen on SuSe.

I've been using Gentoo for quite a while. I've tried others, but I always find my way back to Gentoo.

    Gentoo or Debian.

Gentoo isn't appropriate for server use—it's way too easy to break things like php with a simple emerge. You don't want bleeding-edge packages, you want packages that have been thoroughly tested /together/. You're best off sticking with RHEL/CentOS or vanilla Debian if you insist on Linux, and include FreeBSD or OpenSolaris if you aren't insisting on Linux.
