PTotD: Are personality tests useful?
I love MBTI -- I have actually found it really helpful in (1) understanding how to work with others and (2) explaining myself to others I work with. For (1), understanding that I'm a J when others are P helps me deal with my desire to be scheduled and structured and other people's preference to take things as they come, and remember to strike a balance. For (2), to explain for example that when I get home I need at least an hour, sometimes 2, to come down from the elevated energy I need to maintain to be social and outgoing at work to a relaxed enough state for sleep. Which means when working till 1-2 am, I don't actually sleep until 2-4 am... It's good for others to know that.
On the other hand... a friend recommended the Enneagram as more use than MBTI. I just did it the other day. For me, not so useful as I already knew most of those things about myself. Any of you know it? I'll write more about it another time.
