I get the outrage with animal abuse (Michael Vick), but I don't understand why there isn't more outrage over human abuse.

Amen Brother! Some talk show guy put it like this: animals (especially dogs and cats) are seen as the picture of innocence. But adult humans just don't seem to hold that same place for lots of folks. I would argue that when bad things happen to children, it seems to garner more sympathy or media attention than for adults. It's a weird world sometimes.
