Can I just quit everything and become a video game programmer?

    From what I've heard it's a horrible industry for a programmer. A friend of mine worked for EA Sports as an AI Developer several years ago and told me how the conditions were terrible. The pay was bad and the last several months of the project they were forced to work close to 80 hours a week - with no extra compensation. Doing what you love is one thing, but that's just ridiculous.

    You should try the indie developer route. Now that we have xbox live, playstastion network, and steam it might be possible to make some money there (I don't know how hard or easy it is to get started tho). Oh yeah and with the iPhone's 2.0 firmware update you could also do something there.

    Just as Brian mentioned, with Nate's friend as a prime example, you should probably avoid big companies like EA and either start your own or enter an indie dev.
