Public Notes

  • Public I predict a spike in car accidents this week due to people who were just barely coordinated enough to safely drive while talking on their cell phones now fumbling to figure out their new-fangled "hands-free" accessory.

Stupid law; reckless driving is already illegal, and some people are perfectly capable of driving safely while talking on the phone.

  • Public I think it's time to stop listening to the Security Now podcast. Just overheard Leo bagging on .NET because the installer is bigger than Steve's SpinRite executable. So many times on these casts Leo would do so much better just keeping his mouth shut on stuff he's ignorant about; like the old saying goes. Plus, while Steve generally has a pretty good grasp on most of their ...

  • Public Wow, I thought this post on "issues" with the latest Ubuntu version was actually going to be something significant, which would have been a surprise to me since I've been running this version since early alpha. Turns out it's just total nitpicking. Oh, well.

  • Public Linux install tip: always get the "minimal" or "network" CD image. It does take longer to install and requires a network connection, but the CD never goes "stale", and you also don't need to download updates right after installing. Plus you can put them on those cool tiny CDs.

  • Public So disgusted with politics....

Just finished listening to Obama (re)explain his position on the Rezko house issue as well as the pastor thing. He did a perfectly fine job, and it's pretty admirable considering if it were me I'd be going off on the press for what they've become in this political system.

It infuriates me to see reporters trying to make "news" out of total ...

  • Public Lessons learned so far on Twitter:

    1. Don't follow Gillmor - way too many out of context conversation posts that don't make any sense unless you're seeing the whole thing.

    2. Twitterfeed (people auto-posting content from other sources like blogs into Twitter) is exceedingly annoying.

  • Public I was getting distracted driving down the 405 and watching the GPS tracking dot on Google Maps update in real time. At the default zoom level, it's basically like a 1 or 2 fps animation of me driving down the freeway.

Add in the extreme usefullness of the color coded traffic indicators on the freeways, and this is an indispensable app for people who live in LA.

  • Public I'm about halfway through listening to the "The Gang" podcast from 2/22 and I think I may have crossed over into some sort of polar opposite parallel dimension: Steve is spewing all kinds of insanity and Jason Calacanis is the voice of reason???

  • Public Best politician's statement on net neutrality I've heard; sounds like he actually understands the issue.

It's from Obama, from June of 2006. It looks like he did a bunch of these podcasts before he started running for pres.

  • Public If Steve Gillmore keeps talking about the Google Reader / GMail "scandal" on every freaking show (now daily) I think I might have to unsubscribe.

It's not just that I disagree with him (although I do), but he makes such a big deal about it on virtually every show, while at the same time being a big fan of Facebook, who have done far worse stuff recently.
