thanks for your input guys!! all of your replies were greatly helpful. I think i've decided to buy a set of noise canceling earphones, most likely either the denon or the shure for sure. :)

    Cool. Just don't make the mistake I did. I bought some Sony noise-cancelling headphones... and they work great as long as I don't move any part of my head. Any movement of the jaw, or wrinkling of my brow... you name it... it causes the headphone "frame" to flex, and it sounds like thunder in my ears! Not good! So what I'm saying is, try 'em out thoroughly while the free return/customer satisfaction deal is in effect.
