My neighbor got a new iPod. She has Tiger. Apple says she needs to buy Leopard just to use her new iPod. That's unjustifiable greed.

    I can't believe that.
Sounds like the Betamax saga all over again.

Sounds like when MS required buying Vista to use Halo 3.

Something sounds wrong with that. How newfangled of an iPod was it?

Apple needs to remove those $$ from their eyes.

The forums I've seen say the latest Tiger is required. I never heard that Leopard is mandatory now...if true...ridiculous!

    That's what happens with Apple......

I'm using Tiger and I have a 16 gig iPod Touch, what's up with that? I've never heard of this mandatory Leopard bit. *confused*

Tiger (which does work) was released over three years ago. That's a very long time in IT, and Apple have released two major OS upgrades since Panther. Would you rather that Apple engineers spent time ensuring that all new devices worked on ancient software, or improved the software that nearly everyone is using? Compare the cost of an iPod (I presume it's not a shuffle) to the price of Tiger/Leopard, and the additional benefits from upgrading. Apple made the right decision here, and your neighbour needs to realise that if you want to use the latest gadgets, you can't be using a nearly five-year-old operating system (Panther was October 2003).

Hey Apple, is it just me, or was I running my iPod on Tiger 2 months ago? Get that greed out of your head.

Wow Tony, I've never seen such blind devotion to nonsense. Why should apple randomly choose to support only the newest and best? They support XP fully even though it is even older. The bottom line is that all the people want from an ipod is a glorified hard drive. Apple should be able to make that work on just about everything.

One of our Master Control Operators has the same issue. Only he has Panther and needed at least Tiger to get the iPod working.

None of the new iPods require Leopard. 10.4.11 with latest Quicktime and iTunes will suffice.

Having been trapped in the Windows world...the only issue that I have ever run across is an upgrade of iTunes when I purchase a new iPod. As ask above, how new of an iPod is it? I can't imagine that in the Mac world that the iPod depends upon the operating system...since iTunes is the desktop interface.

Well I guess he's not gonna update here himself.

As much as I love Apple, that sounds like their credo to me. Tsk tsk.
