Congrats! I am so excited to eventually make the step to a DSLR. I know a lot of serious photographers love the 40D and 5D.

Ryan, a DSLR makes a world of difference. I've been shooting with a Canon Rebel for about 4 years now. I also keep a Canon SD1000 in my backpack or pocket for when I don't have the bigger camera around. Both are great but the Rebel is more able when available. ( I just can't carry it around all the time. )

I'm very excited about the 40D though. Everyone I know who has one seems to love it.

Just because I'm still exploring this issue myself, what did you feel your XTi wasn't giving you when you decided to go for the 40D?

    1) It's not actually mine, it belongs to work (they just let me take it everywhere and in return they get to use my photos). Thus I can't buy more lenses and accessories for it.

    2) It's 4 years old and only 6.2 megapixels. (It's not the XTi, it's just a plain old Rebel)

    3) The 40D is a nice step up and is faster. Mine is coming with a 28-135mm lens which will also give me more flexibility than the 18-55 I have on the Rebel.

That said, the Rebel is a great camera and has served me well, whether shooting people, buildings or events. http://www.flickr.com/.... I would recommend a Rebel to anyone looking to take the leap into DSLR. I've been quite pleased with it.

But it was time to get my own and as such time to move up. Alas, next I'll end up filling up my 500gb external drive then I'll need to get another of those!
