Wake me when this place has feeds and an API. And an OS X desktop client not done in Adobe's AIRy uncanny UI valley. Possibly also an IM bot for updates.

I'm getting the same vibe. Hard to hook in to anything, too claustrophobic. And the all-or-nothing email notifications are outright annoying.

"Uncanny UI Valley" is one term for it. A stand alone desktop client for OSX would be good too.
I wonder sometimes if users expect too much for their aps - I mean, I agree with some of the criticisms of the service, but wonder if we're constantly trying to build the Killer (Communicating) App, and if it's impossible to do so.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I still wish these apps had a better methodology for finding/adding friends.
It seems that tons of previously solved issues were forgotten/not yet implemented into newer offerings (although the 'groups' function here is nice to see)

my take is that a lot of these apps are doing great on the initial 80% of comm/social/presence app but few have started to nibble into the final 20% of the features that would make them killer.

The e-mail chatter is phenomenal, even for this genre of software. Now to turn off the e-mail chatter and perhaps not look at pownce again for a really long time

Heh, I also need some better reply notification from Pownce - I got 5 replies to this message, and didn't know till I checked :)

Seriously, launching without an API?

Yeah, there *is* an API, in use by the AIR desktop app. But, I've not yet gotten motivation and my wire sniffer action together enough to reverse engineer it. I recall reading that the deal is they want to polish it up some more before opening the public floodgates.
