Well, what are you trying to do? Podcast? I can make some recommendations, just tell me price range, and what you want to do.

I'm looking to record environmental sounds, in reasonably high fidelity. Something like those "Song of the Whale/Stork/Beaver" CDs, but recorded in a city. Ideally, I'd want omnidirectional pickup, something that does justice to distant noises, perhaps with stereo input from two mics separated by a few feet. Does this make sense?

I think you'd have more luck with a USB or Firewire Audio/computer interface, like from M-Audio or DigiDesign. As for microphones, I only know about recording voices/instruments.

FWIW, I've had good luck with the Mbox 2 from DigiDesign for my own home guitar recordings, and it's small/light enough that it could feasibly be taken on the road.
