‘Friend' doesn't mean what it used to
"Social networks might have provoked a lot less eye-rolling from their users if they'd gone with the word “contacts” instead of “friends.” But friendship is a potent idea, and it was the allure of collecting real friends that got the ball rolling on social networking in the first place. Little did we realize that the ball was unstoppable, and would career over us like an Indiana Jones boulder, crashing off into the undergrowth."

I've been on LiveJournal since 2001, and the whole "friends" label is something that has been an issue for a very long time. People seem to take it far too personally when you "friend" or "unfriend" them. I've "unfriended" people who I'm good friends with "in real life", but could no longer stand to read their posts either because it was banal, inane or because it was just far too redundant since I saw/spoke to them so often. Some of them acted like I had stabbed them in the back.

Remember this is a world of lies. It is inherent in the world that it cannot be described as it is. Calm your heart, accept your troubles and sing the blues away.

yes the word Friend is a strong word to me that isn't abused. there are acquiescence and good quintessences and then there are friends. friends = people i know and hang out for years ie friends are people who are my best friends.
