Public Question: How does one invent a language without prior knowledge of any form of verbal communication? When people started speaking a long long time ago...how did they do it? I understand that it's possible to simply associate sounds to things, but even then..why are there so many languages?

Whenever people think today, they usually speak using language in their heads...but how would people think before learning ...
