Pro: The operating system and most applications are free
Con: You might have issues with your hardware working under Linux
Pro: Many alternatives exist to popular Windows & Mac programs
Con: Many specialized programs will only run under Windows, and may or may not work under WINE or a virtualized Windows environment (ie VMWare, Virtualbox, QEMU)
There... I got the list started.

Pro: Linux is typically less "resource hungry" than windows. You can get good performance without needing high end hardware.
Con: There is a slight learning curve if your coming from a purely windows environment. Especially when it comes to troubleshooting an issue.

Here is my honest opinion. If you love to geek out, you'll like linux a lot. If you like EVERYTHING to just work properly when you want it to, you'll find linux a bit frustrating. Something always seems to go haywire at just the wrong time. But if you like to solve problems, it is very gratifying when you actually figure things out and fix them. Be prepared to do a lot of forum reading when you need to fix problems, and try not to ask too many questions before you've read up, linux hippies can be mean. :-)

Linux is very stable and there are a ton of free programs for it.
But if you are a gamer like me it's very frustrating. If game publishers provided native Linux releases I would use Linux all the time. But they don't, so I use Windows XP.

Pro: Ubuntu
Con: Most all applications are Alternative, like stated above, so if your used to how a program works, you may have to re-learn how the alternative works.

pro: no effin Norton hogging your system memory
con: gaming
con: drivers for almost anything
