Pownce Killed My Blog!

I had a blog for many years at http://www.tadspot.com but I finally quit updating it for a bunch of reasons.

It was a hassle. I had very few consistent readers. Sometimes I'd go for days with nothing to say because I didn't want to comment on the same stuff everyone else in the blogosphere was commenting about.

Then came Twitter. Twitter was cool - I saw a community grow and people responded to my tweets. We could kinda, sorta have conversations.

But that was the problem. Twitter didn't really let me express myself. It couldn't quite fill the void left from not blogging.

On to Pownce. I got into the pownce closed beta very early on and saw a really strong community grow very quickly. Since we're not limited to 140 characters most of my core friends and I have gotten to know each other pretty well.

Pownce provides almost exactly what blogging gave me and then it gives me more. I can write notes as long as any blog post. I have friends that read (or at least skim) everything that I write and comment on it regularly.

I have a venue to vent, explain, tell stories and share new stuff. I can include silly pics I find and stupid YouTube videos. All of our notes in Pownce are also findable in Google. Each note has its own URL, so we can find it later.

And, unlike the blogosphere, Pownce encourages playful banter. We have a Friday night party thread. We post silly nonsense and crack each other up. Pownce has a MUCH more immediate feel to it than blogging ever did!

Almost every feature in a "normal" blog is here on pownceland. But we're missing some features too. We don't have any way to monetize what we write here. Customization is really limited. I can't add html widgets or play with groovy ajaxy javascript stuff.

Overall though, I don't really care too much about those features. Sure - it'd be nice to throw down some Google Ads and make a few bucks, but then Pownce would get really ugly. I'm not writing to make money. I write because I enjoy it.

The biggest feature we need here on Pownce is the ability to edit our posts. Nearly every time I post something more than 10 lines long I find some errors I wish I was able to fix.

And now, FriendFeed. I just found FriendFeed yesterday and I think I'm seeing how useful it is. When I post this pownce note, everyone who's following me on FriendFeed will be notified.

The public FriendFeed feed is notified as well. FriendFeed extends my audience beyond the folks who have pownce accounts. The twitterers and tumblrs and stumblers can all find me.

That's pretty powerful. I'd like to help bring more people to Pownce and I'd like to increase my audience.

I have no illusions of attracting a huge audience, but more friends == more fun!

I'm taking a look at it now. Looks really interesting. Kind of surprised theres no support for any of the larger blog setups yet though. Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding something.

Still dabbling with Friendfeed, but I think you make good points.

I think blogging works best if you have a particular niche or subject area you want to write about. It gives you a good way to present your articles, archive them by date and keyword, etc. But if you are more of a generalist and are looking more for interactive dialogue, Pownce is certainly the way to go.
