Great and Bad investments for the next 10 years:
I was thinking the other day about good and bad investments for the future. This thinking was spurned on by the fact that it cost me $70 to fill up my tank and big truck drivers are paying $4.50+ for diesel.
The absolute WORST place to put your money right now is any company with a large, establish fleet of big trucks. I think that would include lots of transportation companies and maybe UPS, FedEx and similar. I'm betting UPS and FedEx are both working towards solutions, but they're weighted down with their old, expensive fleets.
Because of the stupidly high cost of gas I think we're on the cusp of some fantastic innovations - particularly in the field of transportation of essential items - food, etc.
So, a great investment would be to find an up and coming transportation company which has a proven innovation to reduce the cost of transporting goods. So, a cross-country trucking company which is converting to diesel-electric hyrbrid tractors. Stuff like that.
I'm not aware of any companies like that, but I think it's time to start looking. I know that right now, somewhere, a group of folks are sitting around a table designing the solution to rising food costs via transportation optimization.
Investors that get in on something like that early on will make obnoxious profits.
