Public Notes

  • Public Read "Digital Fortress" (Dan Brown) (on load from Mum & Dad). Not bad - I felt I ought to have read these since so many people seem to have (or maybe they just saw Hanks in a movie!). The end was a bit slow - the answer was obvious as soon as the segments were found, but it took the meant-to-be-genius characters ages to figure it out. The ring part had a bit ...

  • Public Read "The Robots of Dawn" (Isaac Asimov) (on loan from Mum & Dad). A pretty good read - I think I enjoyed this more than the Foundation books. A lot of references to other stuff (maybe there's an earlier book with the same central characters?) which made me more interested in reading the whole lot.

  • Public First time leaving Sam with a sitter tonight (Helen Blogg), although I guess it was leaving Sam with his grandparents and them leaving him with a sitter. All went very smoothly (he went to bed just after she arrived and before I left, and didn't make any noise all night. 6 hours in all - a very long quiz night!

  • Public I told Sam that it was nearly time for bed and he ran off. A few minutes later I went to look for him and he was curled up on his bed with his blanket and dog. I shut the blinds and read him a story and five minutes later he was asleep :)

  • Public The new Pownce app (only an alpha) is probably better than the terrible old one, but it's still not great. What do people see in AIR? It's a bad choice, every time.

  • Public Downloading the new Pownce app in Safari gives me a folder...works in FF3.

  • Public This is more-or-less what I thought too. Except for the App Store opening a day early part - wake up you dumb Americans, it's been July 11 for 22.5 hours already.

  • Public Was the second person at the WestCity Vodafone store this morning. Bought iPhone, came home and activated. Looks good so far. No data plan yet because store guy didn't know much. Will use wifi for now and sort it next week.

  • Public If you come to my door trying to sell me something and I say "no", that's your cue to politely thank me and go away. Keep talking and not only will I shut the door in your face, I will never consider using your product. If you want me to be polite, be polite to me.

  • Public This is a great read. I've added it to the list of essays/blog posts to give to my students to read. (Only the good students will bother, but those are the only ones I really care about anyway).

  • Public I knew that an iPhone in NZ would be sadly expensive (in terms of plans), but I didn't expect it to be this bad :(

  • Public It took 2.5 hours to get Samuel to sleep tonight. This has been a tiring day.

  • Public Liv put Sam to bed by herself tonight (I was at netball) - the first time she has put him to bed in bed - and he got up about 30 minutes later :( All seems well now, though - hopefully he makes it through the rest of the night!

  • Public Saw "Who Needs Sleep Anyway" at Skycity. Good, but not great. Very Roger Hall. Parts were too much an advertorial for Plunket, who I'm sure did good things once, but are useless now from what I can tell.
