The problem with "does language/framework/library X scale" questions, aside from the fact that languages, frameworks and libraries don't scale, of course (as Cal Henderson is so fond of saying, it's architectures that scale), is that nobody ever responds with "well, what's your business model look like?"

I bring this up because I'm growing increasingly convinced that "we have one gigantic instance of the app and everybody uses it" is typically the wrong answer.

    Well, when every starts using appengine, we won't have to worry about scaling...

    I dunno why I got downmidded for saying this on Reddit, but it all depends on how you use your tools. If you write O(n^3) code, then your framework won't scale.

    I absolutly agree. Scaling is an issue of planning your application to handle the ammout of users you expect, and putting in place the tools and resources to handle this. However, it's one of these things that there isn't really much blogging about it so people are not being exposed to the idea of scaling until very recently. Maybe it would be a worthwhile chapter in your upcoming book?
