Have spent the last four hours researching pros and cons of my kid's top two choices among high school specialty centers out of the four she got accepted to. It's between the IB program and the Center for Humanities, and she has to make her choice by Monday. Going nuts because they both look like incredible programs. An embarrassment of riches, really - nothing like the choices (or lack thereof) I had at her age. (Namely: the one high school - academically lagging - that was a 25 mile bus ride away from home.)

What'd she decide?

Finally went with Center for Humanities. It was rough and we spent all weekend haggling over it! But I'm happy w/ the choice. This is a school whose past field trips have included NYC (to visit the UN) and the Netherlands (to visit The Hague). Center's director is a recent Fullbright scholar, and they have lots of AP offerings at the third & fourth year level. And if she changes her mind and wants to go back to IB, she can reapply at any point in the next two years.
And this is a public school system, mind you! We really lucked out, living as we do very marginally within the district's borders (just north of the Richmond city line, in Henrico County). We're in a far less affluent area relative to the West End - whose tax base makes these programs possible. So for once in my life I'm glad for the existence of rich people. (Is that wrong of me?)
