Public Coast Guard rescue swimmers who leap out of helicopters into stormy seas are prepared to do most anything to locate and retrieve distressed mariners, but when transporting the injured back to shore, their skills are limited.
"We don't equip or configure or man our aircraft for air ambulance-type activities," said Cmdr. Kenneth Harman, a flight surgeon at Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod.
